Athens and surroundings –In the shadow of the Acropolis

Athens, named after the God Athena, is the capital and the largest city of Greece with a history that goes back 3000 years. It is the city of wisdom, sculpture and theatre, where democracy, mathematics and philosophy were born.

The city boasts of unique archaeological sites, monuments and museums and hosts many cultural events and festivals. Today Athens is the commercial, cultural, financial, political and industrial centre of Greece.

Plaka, the picturesque romantic part of Old Athens, situated in the shadow of the Acropolis, with neo-classical mansions and vivid day and night life is one of Athens main features together with the Syntagma square and its traditional guard change. Glyfada, at the south east of Athens is famous for its beautiful beaches.
